Building on a Tradition of Performance

Construction
Since 1957 we have established a tradition of performance that we continue to build upon today.

But it’s not what we are that sets us apart. It’s who we are. The bricklayers, laborers and operators who actually put the work in place are among the best in our industry. Our professional staff that supports that effort is no less important, and plays a crucial role in ensuring that our crews have the resources necessary to perform the job at hand.

With SMI as a member of your construction team, you’ll have a Bricklayer Foreman who will direct the day-to-day activities of the crew, an Area Superintendent who will coordinate manpower and assist the Foreman as necessary, and a Project Manager who is responsible for the estimate, subcontract, pre-job meeting, shop drawings and the overall coordination of the project from start to finish. Behind the scenes we’ll have additional members of our team involved in the proper accounting of the project to ensure accurate and timely documentation of the work as it progresses.

Well-maintained equipment, appropriate for the task, is another asset you’ll receive with Seedorff as a member of your team. We have all of the necessary resources, from rough terrain cranes and forklifts; to scaffold, plank and guardrails, we’ll provide all that’s required to complete your project on time and within budget. In the event that equipment maintenance or repairs are required, we have two mobile service trucks and qualified mechanics on call to minimize or eliminate down time. This is just one of the ways we prevent potential problems, saving you valuable time in your construction schedule.

Masonry protects your home or your business. We protect your investment.

Safety
One Million Safe Hours. It’s huge, it’s challenging and it’s well within our reach.

From our newest employee to the seasoned SMI veteran, each of us is focused on the effort to reach One Million consecutive hours without a lost time injury. We’ve developed a series of team as well as personal incentives that recognize and reward a variety of milestones on our way to One Million Safe Hours.

But more important than any incentive, we have a responsibility to provide our people with the safest work environment possible. We owe it to ourselves and we owe it to our families. We take that responsibility very seriously, and very personally.

Our two full-time Field Safety Trainers and our Risk Manager coordinate our overall effort in safety. In addition to day-to-day support of the field, they also provide safety orientation for new employees, continuing education opportunities, facilitation of our area safety committee meetings and work in cooperation with our insurance providers to create the safest work environment possible.

We put the resources and support for safety in place. Our team in the field makes it happen.

Pre-construction Design Assistance
In the event that you have a masonry project in the design phase and would like assistance, we can help. Our involvement in your project prior to the actual start of construction provides the opportunity to apply decades of experience toward problem prevention. Our staff has a clear understanding of details that ensure the performance of masonry assemblies. We can help make your project a success for the long haul.

With early involvement, we can work with your staff and your Architect to ensure that your design incorporates details that have a track record of outstanding performance. We can also assist you with recommendations regarding materials that are appropriate to your specific application.

Since 1957 we’ve been accumulating experience and knowledge. Let us put that experience to work for you.

Budgeting
Interested in knowing the value of the masonry on your project prior to construction? Our estimating staff can determine the value of your masonry as part of our pre-construction services. Through the identification of budget figures for specific portions of the work, we can assist you in determining the most economical approach for the masonry on your facility, without compromising the quality of the finished product.

Accurate budgets in the early stages of your project prevent potential problems relative to finances and allow the job to gain uninterrupted momentum once construction begins.

Restoration
Included in our resume’ is a variety of experience in the field of masonry restoration. In 1997 we completed the historic renovation of City Hall for the city of Sioux City, and work continues through 1999 and into 2000 in Des Moines on the Iowa State Capitol Building. We’ve also completed repairs on the grounds of the Iowa State fairgrounds as well as a variety of churches, schools and municipal facilities.

The restoration of the Sioux City City Hall involved the dismantling of two elevations of the existing structure, cataloguing each individual piece of stone and reducing the effective bed depth of the original stone. Once this scope was complete, and following the erection of the new structure, the dismantled stone was precisely reassembled in its original location. Restoration at the Iowa State Capitol involves the targeted demolition and replacement of Indiana limestone and the spot restoration and pointing of the brownstone on the facility. Intricate hand carved details add character as well as challenge to the scope of the project, which will extend into the summer of 2000.

Although you may not have a State Capitol or a City Hall that requires attention, contact us for any of your needs relative to masonry restoration or repair. We’ll investigate your specific concerns, identify the cause of the deterioration, and suggest options for repair based upon your particular requirements. In the event that you have special requirements which are not readily available in our immediate market, we have an extensive network of contacts through which we can locate and procure materials and information to meet your needs.

Repair Solutions
Having problems with a facility and can’t identify the source or the solution? You may have efflorescence, cracking, spalling or even active moisture at the interior space of your facility. We can help.

We’ll inspect the condition of the masonry assembly and the related work that potentially impacts its performance. From this point we can identify the source or sources of the problem and suggest potential solutions. In most cases, we can assign a budget to each of the repair options and quantify for you the magnitude of the necessary repairs.

Over the course of the past forty years we have accumulated a variety of experience and seen hundreds, perhaps thousands, of different designs and construction techniques. We understand masonry and we can create an appropriate set of circumstances on your project to allow optimal performance for your particular masonry application.

Continuing Education
coned.gif (13424 bytes)We believe that the key to continuous improvement is prevention, not detection. Continuing education plays a key role in ensuring that all participants in the construction process, from design through construction and facility start-up, have the proper information with which to make decisions.

Through a cooperative effort with industry organizations such as the Masonry Institute of Iowa, Master Builders of Iowa, AGC of America and the Brick Industry Association we have developed seminars, presentations and panel discussions to heighten awareness and elevate the quality of information available to Owners, Architects, GC’s, Suppliers and Service Providers.

Closer to home, we’ve also developed in-house seminars that provide opportunity for continuing education within our own ranks. Our series of Blueprint courses teach not only the basics of navigation through contract documents, but also the more complex coordination of architectural, structural and steel shop drawings. The student to teacher ratio for these classes does not exceed 2:1. In addition, we offer Operator Training and the OSHA 10-hour course through our Safety Department, and Leadership Skills and Communication through our Annual Field Leadership meetings.
