Hi Everyone – earlier this morning the COVID-19 concerns found their way to one of our jobsites in Des Moines.
The project involved was The Fifth Parking Garage in downtown Des Moines.
Facts related to the incident
Given the lack of interaction with the affected Subcontractor’s employee and the unknown nature of his exposure, the job was shut down out of an abundance of caution.
We will keep you up to date as we receive new information, and we direct you to the attachment for more details. Thanks.

Hi Everyone – earlier this morning the COVID-19 concerns found their way to one of our jobsites in Des Moines.
The project involved was The Fifth Parking Garage in downtown Des Moines.
Facts related to the incident
- A Subcontractor (carpenter) employee on the The Fifth project was in the proximity of his niece who was in contact with a Dallas county COVID-19 case over this past weekend.
- We do not know, as of present, any other information related to where, extent, period of interaction, etc. This is precautionary.
- Weitz was informed of the above by the affected worker this morning and made the decision to shut the jobsite down on a temporary basis.
- Weitz has issued an update that is attached for your information.
- We had two (2) field employees onsite and one (1) office employee that was onsite on March 16, 2020.
- Our two (2) field employees working onsite have since been instructed to go home to self-quarantine until further notice. Our team members were working in an aerial lift and had no direct interaction with the affected worker.
- Our office employee was onsite for approximately 1-hour yesterday and returned to the office for the remainder of the day. He briefly visisted the Weitz trailer and also stopped in the Grimes shop this morning prior to our being notified.
- He is also self-quarantined pending the receipt of results from the removed third-party niece, which we expect today or tomorrow.
- Our office and shop staff were informed of the situation and given the option to work at home or the office, given the limited exposure. This is at the individual’s discretion.
- Any meetings or similar events involving Des Moines office staff that are pending prior to receipt of testing results from The Weitz Company should be re-scheduled, changed to a conference call, or utilize technology to limit interaction.
Given the lack of interaction with the affected Subcontractor’s employee and the unknown nature of his exposure, the job was shut down out of an abundance of caution.
We will keep you up to date as we receive new information, and we direct you to the attachment for more details. Thanks.
