AWS & SMI Staffing: Protecting our Team
Last week we gave direction to our field staff regarding actions we can take to protect our team in the field. This included bottled water only, an increased inventory of gloves, social distancing with job travel, and cleaning of common surfaces.
On Friday, March 20th we stress tested our technology in the corporate office by having our estimating and project management staff work remote. This is intended to test our ability to limit exposure in the office while supporting our ongoing efforts in the field.
We’re making every effort to limit our team’s exposure in static locations (corporate and regional offices) to those in positions that “circulate” from job to job. This would include Area Superintendents, Field Safety Staff, and Project Managers. Estimators, although they do not typically circulate, are critical in continuing to build our backlog so we can run at full speed once the COVID-19 pandemic passes and we return to “normalcy” again. Here are steps we are taking:
Area Superintendents and Field Safety Staff
These are our first steps to reduce or eliminate circulation that is typical of our industry, and limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Reporting for Work
Every essential business walks a fine line and we are no exception. We’re moving forward with the well-being of our team as our top priority, while also attempting to maintain full employment and paychecks for our team members and their families.
We will continue to work as we are safely able. However, if you are not comfortable working in the current COVID-19 environment, you are not required to report to work.
If your job progress is impacted (not due to a quarantine situation) and you want to work, notify your Area Superintendent and we will make every effort to keep your paycheck coming.
States have relaxed a number of restrictions on unemployment benefits. If you choose to not work, please give your immediate supervisor as much notice as possible and we will assist you in applying for benefits.

Area Superintendents and Field Safety Staff
- Limit time on jobs and interaction (social distance)
- Support jobsites on an as-needed/specific basis, and work remote to limit circulation
- Work remote as possible
- Participate via conference call or Zoom whenever possible for job meetings
- Limit interaction to Job Superintendents and maintain social distancing
- Job visits for specific purposes (no general visits)
- Work remote with minimal time in the office
These are our first steps to reduce or eliminate circulation that is typical of our industry, and limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
