MBI-WORKS Endowment Announces Award Winners for 2019
Endowment announces $68,000 in funding in initial awards to winners in
Forest City, Strawberry Point and Waterloo, Iowa

DES MOINES – Today, the MBI-WORKS Endowment, a Master Builders of Iowa Endowment fund focused on addressing the workforce needs of the commercial construction industry, announced the 2019 Award Recipients. The Endowment is being used to provide financial assistance through a grant solicitation process to programs and projects focused on increasing the number of people entering the commercial construction workforce and increasing the awareness of the commercial construction industry and the career opportunities available in it. MBI President & CEO Chad Kleppe stated, “As an industry that is an active participant in the war for talent and workers, we are taking direct action with our own resources into programs across the state that are focused on changing the landscape. The MBI-WORKS Endowment is very proud to announce this initial round of funding for three very deserving programs.”
The following projects have been announced as the 2019 Award Recipients:
Cardinal Construction & The Waterloo Career Center
Waterloo, Iowa
Award: $23,000
The focus of this project is to increase student engagement through the Waterloo Career Center by partnering with a local non-profit community organization, Block by Block, to construct small sheds which will provide a secure place for families to store outdoor items on their property. The funds will be used to purchase supplies and materials for the sheds.
Kingland Construction & The Forest City YMCA After-School Program
Forest City, Iowa
Award: $30,000
The focus of this project is to introduce beginner-level carpentry and beginner-level mechanic programming to engage a demographic that currently lacks extracurricular activities in the community. The funds will be used to purchase supplies and a trailer to initiate the program.
Seedorff Masonry, Inc. & The Masonry Institute of Iowa
Strawberry Point, Iowa
Award: $15,000
The focus of this project is to provide curriculum for instructors and support programs to educators through the Building Bricklayers Campaign. The funds will be used to purchase technology and supplies to jumpstart the program.
MBI-WORKS operates as a charitable 501(c)(3). MBI-WORKS has a Board of Directors who determines how earnings from the Endowment are allocated. Each year, the Endowment Board solicits proposals. The next round of funding is expected to open in the Summer of 2020.
