October 22, 2018
At last month’s AIA Iowa Annual Convention, Seedorff Masonry, Inc. (SMI) received two awards recognizing exceptional craftsmanship on Des Moines’ most recent public art installation, A Monumental Journey by artist Kerry James Marshall. AIA Iowa honored SMI with a Merit award for Excellence in Craft at the Awards Celebration on Thursday, September 20. The judges commended the skill and attention to detail given to the masonry in this project saying, “[We] loved the story that was told about how the bricks were crafted…carving the bonding striations, hand trimming the bricks, the process to achieve the manganese ironspot flashing. The piece is so lovingly made that it just stops you in your tracks.” On Friday, September 21, the Masonry Institute of Iowa (MII) awarded the coveted Golden Trowel Award to SMI during the MII Masonry in Design Awards. This accompanied the Grand Award, which was given to substanceatchitecture for the design of the project. In addition to the Golden Trowel Award, Seedorff Masonry was further recognized for 3 additional awards that included the Masonry Detailing Award for Sacred Hearth Cathedral in Davenport, and two Honorable Mention Awards for the Merrill Hotel and Convention Center in Muscatine, IA and the new Liberty High School in North Liberty, IA. |
