United States Courthouse - Cedar Rapids Cedar Rapids, IA
When entering the United States Courthouse in Cedar Rapids, guests and employees are greeted with an impressive, curved native Iowa limestone wall that spans 220 feet wide and 102 feet tall. Prior to installation, SMI built a 10'x10' mockup that was transported to the jobsite. This allowed the architects and owners to evaluate the stone and aesthetic in the same environment the finished building would reside.
Three suspended walkways between the wall and building façade added difficulty to scaffolding and stocking materials. Through design collaboration and tapping into SMI's vast experience, the team was able to find a solution that allowed crews to work at different stages across the wall at the same time. In addition to the walkways, the curve of the wall and varying stone sizes required diligence and attention to detail by our team of masons.
